Combat Winter Skin Woes


As winter approaches, it is time to consider the skin care strategy for your face and body. Dry air, cold wind and even snow can have a significant effect on the health of your skin. You should do everything you can to protect your skin from the harsh winter elements.  Heed the following information, and be proactive about the health of your skin!

For Your Face:

If you are experiencing dry or patchy facial skin, you may need to switch from your normal cleanser to a more creamy one such as “ Chamomile Cream Cleanser” and/or try a different moisturizer like “Equalizing moisturizer”.  Even in the winter you should still use a sunscreen. Try to use a moisturizer or makeup with an SPF of 15.  If you are in an area of the country with snow, you should use a sunscreen with an SPF of 90 or higher.  The snow on the hills reflects an incredible amount of sunlight that could cause sunburn.

For Your Body:

A hot shower can feel wonderful on a cold day, but try to resist, as it can strip your body’s skin of its natural moisture.   Take a short, warm shower instead.  If you are experiencing dry, flakey or ashy skin, a body lotion that includes natural exfoliants, such as our “Ash-be Gone” (coming soon!), can be very helpful in eliminating dead skin so that the moisturizers penetrate the skin.  This is much safer than trying to buff or scrub away dead skin.  

Additional tidbits —

  • Don’t forget to use a quality lip balm, too.  I really like Carmex as it is very good for helping to rid your lips of dry skin.
  • A thin coat of Vaseline under your moisturizer can also help protect your skin.
  • A humidifier to combat dryness from your home heating system If you do not have a humidifier built into your heating system try investing in a portable humidifier.  
  • One of the best ways to deal with dry skin is to hydrate from the inside out.  Drink as much water as you possibly can, regardless of the time of year.  Drinking ½ of your body weight ( in ounces) of water per day, will flush countless toxins from your body and will help keep your skin healthy and fresh.
